How to peel hazelnuts

You can peel hazelnuts at home using available tools. This does not take much time and effort.

The fruits grow on shrubs. They are covered with green skin, and inside there is a kernel in a dense shell. To split it and clean it, you need to use the tools at hand.

How to peel hazelnuts with pliers

To clean hazelnuts at home with pliers, you need to choose the right size tool. The kernel must fit in the grip and not slip out.

Pliers before processing, must be thoroughly washed from dirt so that it does not remain on the core. Then take the tool in your right hand, secure the nut with pliers and press sharply. To prevent the shell from scattering in different directions, you can close the location of the fruit with your left hand.

Important! Do not use much force. The fruit may split into small pieces and you will have to remove the pulp from the debris.

How to peel hazelnuts from the shell with a hammer

To open the hazelnuts with a hammer, you need an additional cloth bag. Washed and dried fruits must be folded into a bag, tied. Then hit them several times. It is recommended to look inside the bag after a few strokes to remove the cracked kernels. If you do not do this, you can end up with a mixture of shell and pulp.

How to chop hazelnuts using oven heating

The easiest and most effective way is to use the oven to clean the kernels. The method allows you to quickly peel hazelnuts. The shells will not only become softer, but the fruits will also roast and taste better.

To do this, you need to wash and dry the nuts. You can rinse them with a colander, and dry them using a kitchen towel and paper napkins. Then the hazel is placed on a baking sheet or in a baking dish without oil. It is recommended to preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

The loaded baking sheet is sent to the oven and kept there for 10 minutes. Take out nuts, cool them. Spread out on a dry towel. Cover the top with the second. For cleaning, you need to walk over the nuts with a rolling pin to roll out the dough.

This method will allow you to crack the hazelnuts without damaging the kernels, and the pieces of the shell will not fly in different directions.

How to peel hazelnuts with a garlic press

You can easily peel hazelnuts using a garlic press. This will require a washed press. The cores are inserted one at a time into the press area and pressed with the handle on top. After the characteristic split sound, you can no longer press. To clean the hazel faster, it is recommended to pre-soak it in boiling water for a few minutes.

How to peel hazelnuts

Under the shell, the hazelnut is covered with a brown skin. It can also be eaten, but it is better to peel it off. Often in this form, the fruits are used for confectionery purposes, for example, for the preparation of sweets, chocolate bars and serving dishes.

How to peel hazelnuts from the skin by roasting

The most popular way to peel a hazelnut. To do this, you need any frying pan and a spatula or spoon. The coating of the pan doesn't matter. The process takes place in several stages:

  1. Preheat the pan over medium heat before frying.
  2. Pour the nuts into the pan without adding oil.
  3. Frying lasts 5 to 10 minutes. The fruits are constantly stirred so that they do not burn.
  4. Pour the fried kernels onto a towel or plate. You need to let them cool down.
  5. Then you should peel the hazelnut, rubbing it between your palms.

The process takes little time and makes it easy to peel the skin.

How to peel hazelnuts from the husk using the microwave

This method allows you to quickly peel nuts. But there is a risk that the fruits may burn if the processing is done incorrectly. The process is as follows:

  1. The kernels must be washed and dried.
  2. Spread them evenly on the plate surface. It is advisable to use a flat dish.
  3. Turn on microwave heating for 30 seconds. Stop it and stir the nuts with a wooden spatula. This procedure must be repeated several times, until the skin begins to peel off.
  4. Take out a plate of nuts and place on a wooden board. Allow to cool.
  5. Peel the kernels by rubbing between the palms.
Important! A wooden spatula must be used when using the microwave. The plate gets very hot and may crack if touched with a metal spoon or spatula.

How to quickly peel hazelnuts with boiling water

The method is suitable in cases where you need to peel the fruit raw without the skin. Boiling water will help preserve all the beneficial properties, as well as the integrity of the hazel. You can peel hazelnuts as follows:

  1. Thoroughly wash the kernels from dust.
  2. Prepare a deep container that closes tightly, for example, a can of the required volume.
  3. Pour the fruits into a container.
  4. Pour boiling water over.
  5. Close the lid tightly and blanch for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Drain and peel the skin with your fingers.

This method of peeling the husk is not popular as the process is laborious and time consuming.

How hazelnuts are peeled on an industrial scale

Previously, kernels were cleaned by hand in production. This took a lot of time, and the cost of the finished product increased significantly. At present, special machines for cleaning hazelnuts have been developed. Each apparatus uses a different method.

Processing has its drawbacks. With such cleaning, hazelnuts lose some of their useful properties, the integrity of the nuts is greatly disturbed. The whole process takes place in several stages:

  • drying fruits in shell;
  • dividing them by size (sorting);
  • shell cleaning;
  • drying the finished product.

Nuts go to production, from where they are sent to a sorting point. There they are poured into a cone-shaped bunker. Through the holes, the fruits enter the elevator, which consists of several stages, which transfers them to a calibration sieve. From there, the nuts fall on the conveyor belt, where, depending on their size, they fall into the crushing shafts of the bunker, rotating alternately in opposite directions and splitting the hazelnuts.

In production, four cleaning methods are used:

  • vacuum method;
  • soaking and frying;
  • mechanical cleaning;
  • cleaning with a sizing-crushing apparatus.

Vacuum method:

  1. Fruits are loaded into the container.
  2. The apparatus is hermetically sealed and air is pumped in to create pressure inside.
  3. A sharp drop in pressure occurs, the shell cracks.
  4. The air is released, the kernels are taken out and sent to the sorting point.

To work on such equipment, you need to undergo special training.An explosion may occur if the device does not work properly.

Soaking and frying:

  1. The fruits are soaked in water using large containers.
  2. Then they are placed in ovens for a few seconds. This is enough, since the temperature is between 600-900 degrees.
  3. Pressure builds up inside the shell and it bursts.

This processing produces the largest percentage of whole kernels.

Mechanical method:

  1. The fruits are poured into a cone-shaped hopper.
  2. They are fed one at a time into the shell cracker. The compression ratio is adjustable.
  3. Peeled kernels fall into a special container.

This is a very lengthy process. At the moment, it is used less often than the others. It requires a lot of work experience. At the exit, the nuts remain in the form of halves and quarters, rarely whole.

Cleaning with a sizing and crushing apparatus:

  1. After sizing, the fruits enter the crushing bunker, where the shell cracks.
  2. Then the kernels fall on special sieves.
  3. With a large flow of air, they pass through the holes corresponding to their size.

In this way, the nuts can not only be peeled from the shell, but also sorted by size.

After cleaning the hazelnuts from the shell, they are sent to the drying chambers. There the products are left for 14-16 hours at a temperature of 30-60 degrees. After drying, the nucleoli are sent to the winnower and again to the calibration machines. On a winnower, they are peeled.

Hazelnut exit after cleaning

The kernel yield after cleaning is 40–47%. The best varieties are Badem, Krasny, Krymsky. High-quality hazelnuts should have a moisture content of at least 10%. It is more profitable to buy it unrefined, since the cost of production is 2 times cheaper. If you clean it yourself, then the output will be 100-200 grams more than with factory processing.

Important! There is a risk of ingestion of rotten and spoiled nuts.

Conclusion

You can peel the hazelnuts from the shell and husk at home, with a little effort. To do this, you can use the items that are in every home. The best method for breaking the shell is the frying method. It is widely used at home and in production. You can peel it by frying, pouring boiling water and a microwave oven.
